Launch: Conflict coverage and media habits in Myanmar

Thursday 25 October, International Media Support (IMS) launches two different studies that provide an insight into Myanmar’s media landscape 2018.

One study unveils the media habits of the population in Myanmar and their understanding of news. The study reveals, among other things, the role of Facebook in the country and uncovers the crucial role state-controlled media still plays when it comes to covering people’s information needs. But media with local presence have good opportunities to attract the public’s attention and build trustful relationships.

The second study looks into the Myanmar media’s coverage of conflict. When the conflict escalated in August 2017 and thousands of Rohingya Muslims began fleeing across the border to neighboring Bangladesh, all eyes were directed at Myanmar. But while the international media has had their attention directed towards the suffering of the Rohingya Muslim, the Burmese media have told a somewhat different story.

The launch begins with a brief presentation of the results of the two studies followed by an open debate on the development situation in Myanmar and the possibilities for interventions in the light of recent events, not least the conflict in Rakhine.

There will be coffee and refreshments. We look forward to a good dialogue about the situation in Myanmar.

If you wish to participate, please register with Emilie Lehmann-Jacobsen ele@mediasupport.org no later than Wednesday 24 October.

The launch takes place at:

IMS, Nørregade 18, Ground floor, 1165 Copenhagen K
