Free expression loses one of its greatest advocates in Tunisia

Nejiba Hamrouni, a journalist and former Chair of the Tunisian journalists’ syndicate (SNJT), passed away on 29 May. Neijiba Hamrouni was also a close partner of IMS.

Nejiba led the syndicate from 2011 until 2014 as Tunisia was undergoing highly critical times of its transition towards democracy and she stood up for media freedoms and journalists’ rights relentlessly.

She was a the forefront of every effort and step to build a new framework for free, strong and independent media in Tunisia, a framework which would guarantee the rights of journalists and promote ethical journalism and democratic debate. She wanted the syndicate to play its full role and to be exemplary.

Nejiba wanted to see a new era for journalism in Tunisia, one which would serve the public interest and the building of a democracy. She fought for principles and fundamental rights and she fought for journalists. Nejiba also fought for women’s rights. As a prominent and strong woman herself, she faced vicious attacks, but she stood firm, no matter what.

“Nejiba battled with force and integrity to advance freedoms and rights in Tunisia no matter the adversity she faced. Her determination and her generosity will be greatly missed, but her memory will continue to inspire all of us,” Jesper Højberg said.

IMS presents its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Nejiba.
