Sepideh: Reaching for the stars in Iran
The IMS-supported documentary ‘Sepideh’, tells the fascinating story of a young Iranian woman who wants to become an astronaut – a story of the battle between ambition and tradition
Through the eyes of Sepideh, a 16-year-old girl, the documentary depicts a unique side of Iran, and tells the heart-warming story about her ambition to become an astronaut and how those ambitions clash with her family’s expectations.
‘Sepideh’ opens across Denmark on 2 October and is set to feature in a number of international film festivals over the coming months. IMS supported Sepideh from its early development phase five years ago.
Documentary film has formed an integral part of IMS’ work to promote dialogue and freedom of expression in the Arab world and Iran since 2005.
Documentary film tells stories in ways that differ from most other media genres. A documentary is a slice of life, inviting viewers into otherwise unseen worlds with untold stories. Documentaries are often also a platform for alternative voices and views and they can portray tendencies and developments in society that are usually overlooked or more difficult to cover in mainstream media.
Facilitating the collaboration between film students, Arab, Iranian and Danish filmmakers is a key feature of our documentary filmmaking programme in the Arab world and Iran. Our work includes support for film productions, co-productions, film workshops, and support for documentary film festivals in Arab region and Denmark.
