Media challenges in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, with a particular focus on challenges related to coverage of terrorism in the Sahel

Seen the increasingly difficult situation for the media in the central Sahel (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger) IMS has, with the help of a local expert, taken initiative to develop a study which identifies areas within the media sectors that need reflection, support and how this can be done.

The overall objective of the study is to improve the knowledge and understanding of media actors in the central Sahel and to highlight contemporary challenges and opportunities in relation to their coverage of aspects of security, including terrorism, and dissemination to their audiences. The study, presented in French, is based on a qualitative methodology and presents a modest mapping of some of the most important private and public media in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, and their main challenges today. Media included are TV, radio, online, print and community media. The study also includes an overview of key legal frameworks and some of the most relevant socio-professional associations, organisations and institutions (regulators, coordination bodies, associations, clubs, unions, etc.) working with the media in each country.
