Beyond the newsroom: Cambodia’s media from an audience perspective
This report presents findings from a qualitative audience study commissioned by IMS (International Media Support) and supported by the European Union, conducted between December 2023 and February 2024.
The research offers rare, in-depth insights into Cambodians’ news habits, media preferences and trust levels, based on interviews and focus groups with over 250 participants across five provinces.
The study highlights a growing reliance on smartphones and social media – particularly Facebook – for news, while TV and radio remain key sources for older generations and women. However, many Cambodians expressed low trust in local media, citing concerns over misinformation and limited coverage of social and political issues. In contrast, international outlets like RFA, VOA and VOD are seen as more reliable.
The report provides recommendations for strengthening media development in Cambodia and helping outlets reconnect with their audiences.
