Copenhagen’s cafes, bars and restaurants mobilise to support Palestinian journalists

On 27 November, Copenhagen’s cafés, bars and restaurants will unite for a city-wide initiative to support journalists in Palestine.

In Gaza, wearing a press vest no longer protects journalists – it makes them targets.

For the past two years, Palestinian journalists have worked tirelessly to expose the reality of the genocide being imposed upon them. Despite mass starvation, mass displacement and witnessing their family members, colleagues and friends being targeted and killed, they have continued their work.

Now, they need more than solidarity. They need urgent financial support and essential resources.

On Thursday 27 November, cafés, bars and restaurants across Copenhagen will unite for a city-wide fundraising initiative in support of journalists in Palestine. Participating venues will donate proceeds from peak trading hours, giving visitors an opportunity to contribute simply by having a drink, enjoying a meal or donating.

The initiative is organised by IMS (International Media Support), a Copenhagen-based non-profit organisation that supports independent media in crisis-affected countries by strengthening press freedom, promoting independent journalism and protecting the safety of journalists through training, resources and advocacy.

Funds raised will support current efforts in Gaza through IMS partner Filastiniyat, a local organisation dedicated to amplifying the voices of Palestinian women and young reporters.

Proceeds will go towards providing emergency financial aid to journalists in Gaza, establishing safe work facilities for female journalists with desks, electricity, internet access, clean water and temporary shelter, emergency packages containing hygiene supplies, winter clothing, blankets and mattresses (depending on local availability), and job opportunities for freelance journalists and photographers seeking to publish their work through Palestinian and regional media outlets.

Venue owners, staff and community members who wish to take part are encouraged to contact gazafundraiser@mediasupport.org. A list of participating locations will be announced soon.
