Arabian Nights Film Festival in Copenhagen

From 12 August – 3 September, Cinemateket in Copenhagen is offering a unique opportunity to view a broad spectrum of films from the Arab region during the Arabian Nights Film Festival organised in collaboration with International Media Support and the Danish Film Institute with support from the Danish Arab Partnership Programme

Films of all genres ranging from documentaries to historical dramas and fiction from Egypt, Jordan, Algeria, Morocco, UAE and Syria will be screened at Cinemateket, Gothersgade 55, Copenhagen between 12 August and 3 September.

The films provide fascinating insight into areas of society in the Arab region that are often too sensitive to be covered on other public platforms such as in traditional media. Life during war is one such topic featured in the film “Coma” which tells the story of three women, a sister, a mother and a daughter living under the same roof in Damascus unable to leave the house due to bombings. You can meet “Coma”producer and Syrian filmmaker Sara Fattahi  at the festival in Copenhagen along with other invited Arab filmmakers who have been invited to describe the opportunities and challenges tied to working with film production in the region.

Information about tickets and the programme can be found on Cinemateket’s website. Check out the programme here.

In addition, nine Danish and six Arab film students who have taken part in a film student exhange programme run jointly by The Danish Film School and International Media Support will screen their films at Cinemateket between 23 August to 3 September.

The aim of the exchange programme is to further promote documentary filmmaking as a genre in the Arab world and as a space for disseminating alternative voices and views not covered in mainstream media while utilising the acknowledged expertise of the Danish Film School. Simultaneously, Danish film students are introduced to scenarios and filmmaking in the Arab world, thereby furthering mutual understanding and sharing amongst peers in the Arab region and Denmark.

IMS’ involvement in the Arabian Nights Film Festival and the film student exchange programme is part of IMS’ overall media cooperation programme in the MENA region supported by the Danish Arab Partnership Programme.
