2014 Yangon Photo Festival winning photos

The Yangon Photo Festival honours the work of aspiring Myanmar photo journalists who work to document history at a crucial time of change in their country.

In 2014, the top prize was awarded by patron of the festival and jury member, Daw Aung Suu Kyi, and the French Ambassador Thierry Mathou to Soe Zeya Tun for his photo essay “Myanmar in Flames”, depicting powerful images from the conflict between Buddhist and Muslim populations in the country.

1st prize: Myanmar in flames

[vimeo width=”715″ height=”477″]http://vimeo.com/87333189[/vimeo]Sectarian violence in Myanmar has killed at least 240 people and displaced 140,000, most of them Muslims, since June 2012. The internally displaced are now living in camps guarded by security forces with little hope of returning to their old lives.

2nd prize: Food, not bombs

[vimeo width=”715″ height=”477″]http://vimeo.com/87333717[/vimeo]”Food, not bombs”, by Minzayar, was awarded the 2nd Prize by a jury presided by Aung San Suu Kyi at the 6th Yangon Photo Festival on February 15, 2013. It tells the surprising story of a young punk in Yangon, Myanmar.

3rd prize: Behind the frontline

[vimeo width=”715″ height=”477″]http://vimeo.com/87561469[/vimeo]Behind the Frontline, by Hkun Li, won the 3rd prize. It tells the story of northern Myanmar’s Kachin State conflict where over 100,000 people have been displaced, since it erupted in June 2011.

The Yangon Photo Festival, organised by Institut français de Birmanie and International Media Support (IMS) offers budding Myanmar photographers the opportunity to participate in free training courses with the aim of giving the new generation of photographers the tools to be professional documentary photographers.
