Twenty years in defence of press freedom

IMS was founded in September 2001. On the occasion of our 20th anniversary, IMS has reflected on the learning experience of the last two decades while looking at what efforts are needed in media develpment now. How can we continue to promote good journalistic principles to fight mis- and disinformation? How can investigative journalism be used to bring power holders to account? How can we keep journalists around the globe safe? To mark our 20th anniversary as an organisation, we looked back at some of our partners' successes – and examined the challenges that continue to make our work relevant.

To mark our 20 years as an organisation, IMS held an event highlighting the work of our partners on the ground in countries such as Syria, Afghanistan and Myanmar. It was an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made, the challenges independent media are still facing and for a little optimism about what the next 20 years may bring.
