Yangon Photo Festival – a chance for aspiring Myanmar photographers
Are you an aspiring photographer from Myanmar? Here is your chance to learn from the best. The first workshops for beginners and more trained Myanmar photographers kicked off on 8 January with more to come during the 6th Yangon Photo Festival which lasts until 15 February. The extraordinary festival from which a new generation of professional Myanmar photographers has grown, takes place under the patronage of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
The Festival and workshops which are organised by the Institut Français de Birmanie and International Media Support (IMS), not only offers the best of international photography through exhibitions, trainers, lectures and screenings, but also amateur and professional training for the new generation of Myanmar photographers. First held in 2009, the Yangon Photo Festival is the first of its kind ever organised in the country.
Under the patronage of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Yangon Photo Festival has grown to be an eagerly awaited annual event, supported by both international and local sponsors. One of Yangon Photo Festival’s goals is training photographers for Myanmar’s burgeoning media, as well as giving international recognition to the best of Myanmar photographers through a screening of the best photo essays produced in the country.
The theme of this year’s festival is “Metta, the path to Peace”. From 10 February, internationally acclaimed photography exhibitions and conferences on the theme will be held in the garden of the French cultural institute in Yangon. People will have the chance to see a selection of the best photographs produced around the world. Prestigious prizes will be awarded by a jury presided by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi during the Yangon Photo Night on 15 February to the best of the photo essays produced during the workshops!

20 – 25 January / Introductory Workshop to street and documentary photography – In Burmese
Designed by Myanmar Image Makers, a group of Myanmar photojournalists and documentary photographers.
29 January – 8 February / Advanced Photo-Essay Workshop / (selection: January 27 & 28) – In English
Designed for professionals and all those who have already developed a special interest in photography, this 8-days workshop will help the photographers to expand their skills by creating a narrative photo essay.
